Talking With a Loved One About Hearing Loss

Supporting Someone You Care About

Hearing loss affects more than just the person experiencing it—it can also impact spouses, family members, and close friends. In addition to potential safety concerns, such as missing alarms, alerts, or important conversations, untreated hearing loss can place strain on relationships. Loved ones may feel frustrated from having to repeat themselves, while the individual with hearing loss may begin to withdraw from social situations, leading to feelings of isolation or discouragement.

How to Start the Conversation and Offer Support

If you’re concerned about someone’s hearing, there are thoughtful ways to encourage them to take the next step toward better hearing:

  • Have an open, gentle conversation about the hearing difficulties you’ve noticed.
  • Avoid repeatedly “covering” for them by translating or repeating everything, as this can unintentionally normalize the problem instead of addressing it.
  • Encourage them to schedule a visit with a hearing professional for a comprehensive evaluation and answers to their questions.
  • Offer to help make the appointment and attend the consultation with them for support.
  • Reassure them that seeking help can significantly improve their quality of life and reconnect them with the people and activities they enjoy.

While starting this conversation can feel difficult, it can also be a meaningful step toward better communication, stronger relationships, and improved quality of life.
