Rabi Ann Musah, an environmental chemist at Louisiana State University who was interviewed for the BBC piece, explained that earwax is especially promising for detecting diseases that are notoriously difficult to diagnose using more common samples like blood, urine, or spinal fluid — testing methods that can be slow, invasive, or simply hard to come by for rarer conditions.

Why Earwax Is Such a Useful Health Indicator

What makes earwax so revealing is its ability to reflect the body’s internal chemistry — specifically, how our metabolism is functioning.

Nelson Roberto Antonios Filho, a chemistry professor at Brazil’s Federal University of Goiás, notes that many serious diseases, including cancer, diabetes, and Alzheimer’s, are fundamentally metabolic in nature. In these conditions, the mitochondria responsible for converting nutrients into energy begin to behave differently than they would in healthy cells — producing different byproducts, or sometimes ceasing to produce certain substances altogether. Because earwax tends to concentrate these chemical markers more heavily than fluids like sweat, blood, tears, or urine, it can offer a uniquely clear signal of what’s happening inside the body.

Building on this idea, Filho and his research team developed what they call a cerumenogram — an experimental tool designed to analyze earwax for markers associated with certain cancers, including lymphoma, carcinoma, and leukemia. Filho has said his team’s long-term hope is for the cerumenogram to eventually become a routine screening tool, potentially performed every six months, capable of helping detect conditions like diabetes, cancer, Parkinson’s, and Alzheimer’s from a small earwax sample.
